If you are looking for the perfect summer getaway, consider the Ionian island Corfu in Greece. Greece has a lot to offer from raw nature, sandy beaches, and rich history.

Before heading out, be sure to add these five destinations on the Corfu island to your bucket list.

1. Canal D’Amour

Canal D’Amour is the famous love canal in Sidari, located on the northern coast of Corfu.  It’s one of the most romantic summer destinations in Europe for couples. And, it makes for a great photo destination.

Legend has it when a couple comes to this canal and swims together, and they will end up getting married.

At the canal, there is a small sandy beach taken up with sunbeds and umbrellas from the local restaurant. Not to worry, you can place a towel on the rocky hills above the canal and take in the warm sun rays.

If you a beach lover, don’t worry.  There is a wide variety of sandy beaches throughout Corfu.

2. Achilleion Palace

The Achillion Palace is ten kilometers south of Corfu Town. It was built for the Austrian Empress Elisabeth – known as Sisi. She was assassinated in Geneva in 1898 by an Italian anarchist.

With a self-guided tour of the palace, you will learn about the history of the Palace, Empress, and the Kaiser. The entrance fee to the palace is 8 euros per person. An audio device for the self-guided tour is available in the palace (available in many languages).

Expect to see some beautiful sights of the Corfu Town, north of the palace, and the Ionian Sea.

3. The Kerkyra Bridge and Vlacherna Monastery

If you are into plane spotting, make sure to visit the pedestrian bridge in the southern part of Corfu Town. Corfu airport is located north of the bridge. Take a seat on the crossing and wait for the planes to take off or land.

Once you are done plane spotting, take a walk across the bridge to Vlacherna Monastery. The monastery is still in use by locals today, even though it was built in the late 18th or early 19th century.

If you want to check out the island next to the monastery, a boat taxi ride is 2 euros. This is Pontikonissi Island – mostly known as the Mouse Island.

To get to Porto Timoni, you hike or take a water taxi. Hiking to the beach it will take approximately 30-minutes. The path is narrow and filled with rocks. If you want a more straightforward way, consider taking a water taxi from the nearby beach Agios Georgios.

5. Paleokastritsa beach

Paleokastritsa beach is one of the two famous beaches filmed in the James Bond movie “For Your Eyes Only.” There are multiple coves around the area, underwater caves, and watersports to explore.
